My name is Ahmed and I’m part of Mechatronics 10.
When I started in this program, I was surprised by the number of people in the academy and that grade 11 were also here and they were going to be working with us. I was expecting that Mechatronics will a more complex form of robotics and that we will only do things related to robotics because last year I saw people building robots to carry out specific tasks, although the daily work has been genuinely different from what I expected. I had no clue that we will be doing CAD modeling, Technical drawings, Fabrication and Computer science as well. Mechatronics seems to be the perfect academy that I would want to be in after I figured out all the things we will be doing here.
It’s been pleasing to meet and work with new people who have the same passion as me and I have made many new connections with different people and as well as some grade 11. I want to be more open towards working with different people because I can learn many new skills and techniques from them. We’ve had to group up with different people to complete engineering design challenges (EDC) which have been challenging and exciting at the same time. For our first challenge we had to build the tallest tower in the class by the equipment supplied to us. For the second challenge we had to build a rubber band shooter and whoever knocks the most cups in 5 tries wins the competition. The last challenge we did was that we had to design and build a bridge out of spaghetti and the bridge had to hold a specific amount of weight and get the ball through it 5 times. I helped move the group work forward as well by contributing effectively to the group. I helped in giving ideas about how to make the design better and I also helped in the build. I completed my part of the work that was assigned to me by the group members and I also helped my group members if they were struggling with the task that was given to them.
Now that we’re actually moving into the real work, I am thinking that I would like to explore electrical engineering further as a possible passion project because electro-assembly involves building and programming Arduino/Raspberry Pi to perform various tasks like showing current weather, telling the time or it can even be used as a calculator and so on. I’m also looking forward to make new connections and participating in all types of interesting challenges as the year progresses and I am planning to take this academy next year as well.
